Is the internet hurting or helping our children’s intellectual acuity?

Search engines like Google and Bing are services that serve up instant information at the click of a mouse! However, is this “click of a mouse” life style that we all live in helping our children, or could it be ultimately damaging them?

Traditional teaching and learning as we once knew it has drastically changed in order to prepare our children to compete in a global society. Search engines like Google allows for student driven, interest-based learning to happen when and where our children dictate, which encourages further learning at their own pace. Ah, the flexibility we have been looking for. That has to have some impact on purposeful learning as well as ownership of learning. A part of learning is the willingness to seek more knowledge and find more answers, and the internet makes it easier to do just that.

Technology has allowed us to veer from manually accessing data to giving us the ability to access data instantly. However, the converse could say that the instant flow of data from one computer to the next is a cheap one trick pony that could actually hurt someone in a multitude of different situations. For example, if someone were bitten by a black widow and didn’t know what that spider was, they might just continue with their day because they didn’t have access to their nearly infinite knowledge bank to look up how deadly the spider can be. So, the internet is in no way a replacement for the brain that every human being has access to, but is instead a supplement.

And I wonder if the internet might just be better for retaining information seeing as our children are learning skills instead of just simply learning facts. Personally, I believe that technology makes learning easier and the internet helps us and our children to become more independent learners. Search engines like Google aren’t trying to replace retention with accessibility, quite to the contrary, Google is making us wise.
