Engaging Brain Teasers

Ever since my children began schooling online, I started making a space in our school room for easy to reach brain teasers.  Our bin of brain teasers has certainly grown over the years.

A brain teaser is a form of puzzle that involves cogitating or mental/cognitive activity to solve.  Normally, this includes thinking in unconventional ways with given constraints in mind; sometimes, it also involves lateral thinking.  Logic puzzles and riddles are specific types of brain teasers. I love having alternate activities for my children to engage in during the school day and our storage bin full of brain teasers has become a popular go-to place for my children and their friends as well.

Hi-Q by Kohner is a game that was the craze back when I was growing up.  It’s a fun and very addicting game.  To start, you place 32 pegs on a board and leave the center hole open.  You play by jumping in a horizontal or vertical direction and each peg jumped is removed from the board.  The object of the game is to remove as many pegs as possible from the board and you are scored on how many you remove.  If you have 5 left that is good, but if you have 1 left that’s a perfect score and Genius!  There are also some variations to this game and it also comes with another brain teaser called Brainbuster.  I’ve only seen this game available on eBay and other online auction sites as well as garage sales,  Price is anywhere from $7-$20.

Rush Hour Brainteaser Puzzle is another long time family favorite.

Your goal as the little red sports car is to get out of the traffic jam by sliding colorful blocks aka cars and trucks, forward and backward.  This brain teaser is made to challenge your sequential thinking skills. You can start out as a beginner and move all the way up to expert

Tangrams are also a lot of fun and challenging.  The tangram is a Chinese puzzle made up of pieces that can be arranged in various ways to make different shapes.

Here’s some great websites for kids to have fun working with shapes and tangrams:
