I won’t let cancer control my life or my dreams

This past January I was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma. I was devastated and overcome with fear and uncertainty. My faith and oneness with G-d got me through, as well as the never-ending support and love from my three children and my dear friends. My dreams also got me through and back on the road to a healthy recovery.

I would dream of traveling to Florida with my three children to see my sister and her husband and my dear friends who have now made Florida their home. I dreamt of the beaches, the warmth, and the many sites to visit. My dreams got me through some very difficult times after being diagnosed with cancer and then going through chemotherapy. I would plan my trip to Florida so I would travel 14 days after my last chemo treatment. Fourteen days after chemo was when I started feeling better and I would had about 1 week until my next treatment.

My chemotherapy treatments caused me to lose my hair ten days after my first treatment. My appetite changed too and I was consuming a bag of Jolly Ranchers every week to help control the nausea. My nails were noticeably turning black and almost looked bruised. I was beyond exhausted, it was a physical, mental, and emotional fatigue.  I got sores in my mouth.

I wasn’t going to let any of these things control my life, so I packed my bags and was on my dreamland vacation. I packed my awesome new scarves and hats, especially the fedoras my oldest son picked out for me. I filled my suitcase with Jolly Ranchers, some fun nail colors, and my meds in case I got one of those sores in my mouth.

I spent some awesome quality time with my sister, her husband, and my friends. My children and I played on the beach and splashed in the waves, soaking up the wonderful warmth of the sun. We spent time at Weeki Wachee with the Mermaids, the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, and the highlight of our trip was visiting Kennedy Space Center!

The news I got in January was shattering and so incredibly scary, but with G-d by my side, holding my hand every step of the way, and the genuine love of my children and friends, I am overcoming. My dream vacation was adventurous and pampering. I never let cancer control my life or my dreams.

  1. You go girl!!! The beach is my healing spot, too, for emotional and physical pains. I hope you can get back soon!

  2. You have been such an inspiration to me. YOU used to say I was the strong one. I’m sorry, but I beg to differ these days. I hope that FL dream vacation becomes a reality soon.
