Saturday, June 14 was a treasured day for the students and families of Colorado Preparatory Academy’s (CPA) graduating class of 2014. The ceremony was held at the King Center on the Auraria Campus in Denver. It was a bittersweet day for student, family members, and staff.
A graduating senior, Alexzandria, beautifully kicked off graduation with the National Anthem, followed by a warm welcome from Hannah Mancina, CPA’s principal. Then we heard from Shannon Cooney, my son and CPA’s Valedictorian. Shannon delivered an eloquent speech and shared his thoughts about failure. He shared several short stories about success through failure and left us with these ending remarks, “Graduating Class of twenty-fourteen, do not fear failure; embrace failure- it is the basis for change, growth, and true knowledge. Be prepared to fall, and be prepared to get up time and time again. Congratulations Graduating Class of 2014, I wish you all more than luck. Thank you.”
An Appreciation Ceremony followed where students took flowers from the beautiful floral arrangements on stage and had the opportunity to go out into the audience and give those flowers to anyone who helped them graduate. It was a very moving way to say thanks to those who truly made a difference in their education and in their lives. Next was a sentimental journey through each graduating senior from childhood to today. Kathryn Piotrowski, CPA Advisor, did an amazing job creating a heartfelt remembrance for all through a slideshow of each graduating senior.
As the diplomas were given out, CPA Staff introduced each senior by sharing a bit about their lives. Thank you to Emily Geherin, CPA Guidance Counselor Extraordinaire and Kathryn Piotrowski, our wonderful Advisor, who both shared words about Shannon’s journey to graduation. As I listened to their introduction of Shannon and watched him being presented with his diploma, I reflected on all of his many accomplishments and successes. I am a very proud Mama!
Our ceremony ended with conferring of diplomas and closing remarks from CPA Executive Director, Amy Valentine. Afterwards, cake was served and families had the opportunity to mix and mingle with other families and CPA Staff.
Thank you to everyone for making this very special day such a memorable one! CPA Admin and Staff, you are all so very much appreciated!
